5 songs you must hear this week: 15 October 2018

1. Parquet Courts, “Almost Had to Start a Fight”
Wide Awaaaaake! (Rough Trade)
RIYL: Slightly stoned indie rock from New York City

Parquet Courts has been one of my favourite new bands of the last couple of years. There’s a looseness to what they do, often resulting in a shambolic sort of presentation. Getting Danger Mouse to produce their sixth album was inspired; he knows how to corral looseness without crushing anyone’s spirit. Recommended.

2. JJ and the Pillars, “Howl” ft. Alyssa Morrissey
Daisy EP (Dine Alone)
RIYL: Sorta folky, sorta rocky

One-time winners of The Edge’s Next Big Thing, Peterborough’s JJ and the Pillars have returned with a new record that was celebrated with an album release party earlier this month at Lee’s Palace. Alyssa Morrissey adds a neat sort of Americana feel to this first single from the album.

3. Kurt Vile, “One Trick Ponies”
Bottle It In (Matador)
RIYL: Courtney Barnett, St. Vincent, The National

If you haven’t discovered Kurt yet, here’s your chance. The dude is an insanely creative songwriter who has a catalogue going back at least ten years. There’s plenty of clever quirkiness to be found on his eighth album, too. Once you’re done, go back to last year’s Lotta Sea Lice with Courtney Barnett. Quite brilliant, really.

4. Royal Canoe, “Rayz”
Waver (Paperbag Records)
RIYL: Alt-J, Gotye, Common Deer

Royal Canoe’s roots can be found in Steinbach, Manitoba, a town about 60 kilometres east of Winnipeg known for all its car dealerships. It’s also known for being a very, very dry Mennonite town. Maybe that’s what drives these guys to get out. This album is due January 25.

5. Danko Jones, “We’re Crazy”
Single (Bad Taste)
RIYL: Kickass blue rock

Danko Jones (the name of the band and the guy out front on guitar and vocals) is preparing a ninth album. Until it’s ready, we have this single and a big backlog of Danko’s podcasts which are very entertaining. You should listen.
