On February 19, 1980, the train that AC/DC was rolling on was derailed at the sudden death of lead singer Bon Scott. But, with the encouragement from Bon’s own family, Angus and Malcolm Young found the right man for the job – Brian Johnson.
With their new lead singer, the album was recorded in just five weeks and in just two weeks after it was released the album shot to number one.
As Angus Young called it, ‘Back in Black’ was a tribute to the late Bon Scott from the music to the album cover itself. It was a Cinderella story comeback for a band many thought would be over.
Malcolm Young defined it most clearly: “We meant it … It’s real. It’s coming from within. “That’s how that album was made – because of what we’d all gone through. And that emotion on that record – that will be around forever.”
